The URBN VINO Project will do a number of things. First and most importantly, it aims to produce quality Central Otago wines for on-trade and retail customers. It will provide a working winery where trade customers and their staff, students and enthusiastic wine drinkers can learn about the process. Winemaking doesn't really make sense until you see it all in action.
Secondly, once in a permanent location URBN VINO plans to produce a limited edition wine to raise funds for a local community organisation. As commercial production increases in the future the intention is to increase the volume of this wine as well.
In April and May 2016 URBN VINO started the project by leasing a temporary premises in the former Gresham Hotel in Queen's Gardens. We brought Central Otago grapes and winemaking equipment to Dunedin for the harvest. All going to plan, URBN VINO will find a permanent home in the historic warehouse precinct in Dunedin in 2018.
